Programs offered:

    • We give youth with different abilities a space, a chance, and learning resources to explore various parts of music and develop a passion for musical expression.

The creation of music also gives them a sense of accomplishment, which increases confidence.

    • Poetry workshops will introduce students to various forms of poetry and creative writing techniques.

    • Students will have the opportunity to write and share their own poems, exploring themes that resonate with them.

    • Poetry sessions will focus on self-expression, storytelling, and building verbal and written communication skills.

  • Your child will learn how to use visual arts to express themselves constructively and process their emotions in a hands-on learning environment. Ultimately leading them to live happier lives as they grow.

As students continue through the program, they will be making art portfolios to utilize in the professional world, and to have as a point of reference of the process they’ve made.

  • Dance is the most physically involved art form we offer. Dance teachers will be paired with physical therapists to meet students’ needs. Students can use dance to express themselves and tell their stories. The music and dance programs will have chances to collaborate since the two art forms go hand in hand.

How We Help NYC Youth

The Arts

  • Youth will engage in an arts-based curriculum and will have the opportunity to choose which subject they would like to study (Visual arts, music, poetry, dance).

  • Classes are divided into cohorts for smaller class sizes and IEP considerations.

  • Students learn how to use their chosen art form to express emotions constructively, while simultaneously improving their skill sets.

  • We utilize the arts in an after-school setting to allow participants time to release, and express their good and bad days. Art is a great way to process and cope with emotions.

Mentorship

  • A person-centered approach values participants' self-discovery and individuality- allowing them to engage with art and life in ways that suit them while providing structure.

  • Lesson plans are collaboratively developed with the youth- promoting their autonomy and contribution to their learning.

  • Teaching artists and guest speakers act as mentors, offering transformative real-life examples. Mentorship is especially exemplified in our career development program aspects.

  • Diagnosed Dreamers youth will benefit from group and one-on-one interactions with inspiring individuals to help achieve their goals.

Growth

Youth in Diagnosed Dreamers programs will have their growth measured by individual goals and artistic knowledge. The development of their self-esteem will be tracked over throughout the 10 week program. Social-emotional well-being and mental health are prioritized in our impact. Students will create tangible portfolios reflecting their growth and utilize them for future artistic opportunities.

The Diagnosed Dreamers Team and a dreamer who sold her first painting ever!

The Founder of Diagnosed Dreamers, Yanique Renwick became a disabled child at 9 years old; making her unable to live out her past dream of being a dancer. She still had a creative drive and transferred this energy into poetry. Ms. Renwick has seen the tremendous difference art can make in young people’s lives and wants to help break the stigma against people with disabilities. She has seen the ways youth transform and light up when involved in the arts in her profession as a Human Services professional. Our founder wants to give teens with disabilities a voice, and an opportunity to prove to themselves that they are more than their disability. ITheyare superheroes!
